SHERWIN-WILLIAMS SALUTES DAYTONA 500 WINNER TREVOR BAYNE ON A GREAT FINISH

March 2011

Warrensville Heights, Ohio – In making just his second-ever Sprint Cup start, Trevor Bayne won the biggest race for NASCAR’s oldest team, Wood Brothers Racing, coming in first at the 2011 Daytona 500.

More than 180,000 fans in the stands and 30 million more watching worldwide cheered as Bayne’s red and white Ford Fusion, featuring its throwback gold #21 numerals, took the checked flag. And despite 16 caution flags, and dozens of cars ‘trading paint’ on the superspeedway, it was the ‘21’ car’s day to have the best finish, which featured the AWX® premium waterborne basecoat/clearcoat system, from Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes.

“We salute Trevor Bayne and Wood Brothers Racing for their outstanding victory in this year’s Daytona 500. For Trevor to get his first Sprint Cup win at ‘the Great American Race’ – the biggest event of the year for NASCAR - makes it all that much more special,” said Adam Chafe, Vice President of Marketing for Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes. “Their car ran great and looked great, sporting its iconic colors from victories past. We’re honored to help the team cross the finish line using our latest waterborne AWX® coatings.”

And at Daytona, just like in the team’s glory years, the red and white Ford with the gold 21 on the doors was in the hunt all day and in Victory Lane afterward. The Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion was painted in throw-back colors to honor David Pearson’s upcoming induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, but team owners Eddie and Len Wood said the colors seemed to do much more than honor a famous former driver.

“We brought back the red and white car with the gold numbers, just like Pearson drove, and we came out a winner,” they said. The last time the Wood Brothers won the Daytona 500 was in 1976 when Pearson battled Richard Petty and was victorious in one of the most historic 500’s ever.

“We’ve been affiliated with Sherwin-Williams for more than 10 years, and now that we’re looking to be leaner in all our shop endeavors, this is the first time we’ve used the AWX® waterborne coating,” the Woods continued. “We guess you could say this next generation of paint worked out pretty well with this next generation of drivers!”

For years, some of the biggest names in racing have trusted their race car finishes to Sherwin-Williams. “More than a dozen NASCAR teams currently use Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes,” said Bobby Moody, Director of Motorsports for Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes. “We aim to help teams cross the finish line and ensure that their cars and their sponsors always look good circling the track. This victory also represents yet another win for a car painted in AWX® waterborne coatings.”

With Bayne’s win, he and the 30+ other drivers who now use Sherwin-Williams finishes have more than 200 NASCAR Sprint Cup victories between them and make up a virtual ‘who’s who’ of motorsports’ finest finishers.
